When to use this
You recorded an interview, podcast segment, or customer call and have a raw transcript full of filler words, false starts, and cross-talk. You need a clean published piece without losing the subject's actual voice or misquoting them.
The pattern
Step 1: Clean and segment.
"I'll paste a raw interview transcript below, with filler words, false
starts, and timestamps. Remove filler ('um', 'you know', 'like' used as
filler) and false starts. Keep every substantive answer intact. Break it
into labeled topic segments based on what's actually being discussed,
don't force it into the original question order if the conversation
jumped around. Paste the transcript below this line:"
Step 2: Review the segments. Reorder if a topic got split across two
places in the raw conversation, or merge segments that are really one
topic.
Step 3: Draft in the chosen format.
"Turn the segments from step 1 into an article. Use Q&A format unless I
say narrative. If Q&A: keep the interviewee's actual words for answers,
tighten questions to one clear line each. If narrative: write third
person, use direct quotes only for the most striking lines, paraphrase
connective material. Preserve the interviewee's actual opinions and
specific examples exactly, don't soften or generalize them. Add a
2-sentence intro that sets up who they are and why this conversation
matters."
Step 4: Have the interviewee, or yourself against the recording, verify
no quote was tightened into something they didn't actually say.Real example output
Raw: "So, um, I think the — the biggest thing, you know, that people get wrong about, like, scaling a support team is they just... they hire more people before they fix the process, right? And then you just have more people doing the broken thing faster." Cleaned Q&A: Q: What's the biggest mistake teams make when scaling support? A: "The biggest thing people get wrong about scaling a support team is they hire more people before they fix the process. Then you just have more people doing the broken thing, faster."
Why it works
Segmenting by topic before drafting stops the model from just reordering the transcript top to bottom, which produces an incoherent article when the conversation loops back to an earlier topic later on. Keeping the interviewee's actual words in answers instead of paraphrasing is what keeps the byline honest, and step 4 catches the tightened quotes that drift furthest from what was actually said.
